VisionAware

VisionAware.org was created in 2006 by Anne Yeadon, M.A., VRT, with funding from Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation. Yeadon is the founder and CEO of AWARE (Associates for World Action in Rehabilitation and Education) founded in 1991 to prepare and disseminate self-help publications and custom-designed educational programs to improve the quality of life and independence for persons who are blind or have low vision. Under Yeadon’s leadership, AWARE has conducted extensive vision rehabilitation work in Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, and South America in addition to publishing pragmatic, easily accessible web-based information culminating in VisionAware.org.

SeniorSite® was created in 2007 by the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) under a generous grant from Verizon Foundation. Senior Site was designed to provide aging adults, their families, and caregivers with practical advice and help on living independently and productively with vision loss. In 2011, Verizon provided additional funding to help visitors more easily connect with information by using their specific eye condition as a portal to critical resources and to connect with other people with similar concerns and needs.

In 2012, to better respond to the information and rehabilitation needs of the increasing numbers of adults with vision loss, the American Foundation for the Blind and Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation joined forces to integrate Senior Site and VisionAware into a single website.

In 2018, the American Printing House for the Blind took over stewardship of VisionAware, FamilyConnect.org, and APHCareerConnect.org, as well as the Information and Referral 800 hotline.
